Recipes

The green smoothie movement gives us a way to consume many more greens that we would ordinarily consume, and in a much “easier to digest” form.
The recipe? There are hundreds of recipes online, but, basically, you just blend up some greens with some liquids, throw in some fruit, fresh or frozen, add some ice, maybe some yogurt and/or chia/flax/ sesame seeds, and go! You don’t need a recipe to tell you what you like, do you? Try some spring salad mix with pineapple chunks, apple, and banana. Add dairy or not. For beginners, start with a small amount of greens and build up as you start craving more green.
Here’s what I do: I use all organic. I toss in some spinach, or maybe dandelion, or a mix of various greens; perhaps Spurgeon’s Collards, chard, or beet greens. Add some coconut water, milk, juice, or almond milk. Blend that till it looks like a green liquid, no solids. Cut up an apple, a pear, a kiwi, or your favorite fruits and toss in. Add some active cultures, or yogurt; maybe kefir. Break up one or two frozen bananas and blend. Toss in ice or not. Many times I use frozen berries, but just experiment; and switch your greens up often. Taste it to see if the flavor is sweet enough; maybe add another banana or more fruit.
BENEFITS?: The benefit of green smoothies is that you are eating your greens and getting in more than ever! You should feel more pep right away…and, from my own experience with stepping on two nails, your body will heal faster, too. Unless you have IBS and this flares it up, there is only great benefit form this delicious treat! ENJOY!

CHANGEOVER: WE AT THE UPSTATE LOCALLY GROWN NETWORK OF ON-LINE FARMER’S MARKETS have gone through many changes and transitions in the nearly seven years of our existence, and we are ready to proceed into another phase. We need your help in order to do this. Upstate Locally Grown has always operated as a not-for profit, even though we haven’t applied for this status. What this means is that all of our efforts went toward promoting Upstate growers, and all proceeds went toward that goal. No-one has ever gotten a salary; thousands of donated hours were accrued towards getting you the freshest, purest, most healthy foods available anywhere. Many have told us that we did succeed in our goals of making the Upstate aware of the need to support the local foods movement in order to keep small farms and businesses growing.
Now we are moving up to applying for non-profit status. We are seeking interns and volunteers who would benefit from the experience of entering into a new era of local food systems. Please contact Donna at 864-353-6096.
PS: Donna is looking to be able to devote more time into her green thumb and raise some killer veggies for the CSA! We need drivers and drop-off folks. If you would be interested in joining this exciting food system, please let us know.

This last market was a photo-op with the Clemson Tiger Cub! What Fun! Some of the vendors brought special goodies just for us vendors to share, and it was like a party! Love those students, too! they are so special!
