About the herbalist
MEADOWLARK FARMS SCHOOL OF FOLK MEDICINE·
From a young age, Jennifer has been drawn to the world outside her window. She has loved way that the natural world can influence a person’s mood and fresh air refreshes the lungs. It was not until she was older and started to explore the concept of homesteading and natural living, that Jennifer came to find herself in love with the idea of herbal medicine.
Jennifer spent several years as a personal injury paralegal, watching the effects of modern medicine on injured clients. The passion to learn how to better help not only those clients, but also her own family and friends, led Jennifer to the Herbal Academy of New England where she immersed herself in her studies and began to seek out classes, books and any other source of information she could find to locate a more natural answer.
Once she started to see the more natural approaches, she started offering these herbal remedies to her family as well as others through her herbal company Meadowlark Farms. It has since been a great pleasure for Jennifer to see her husband, children and friends curb the side effects of prescription drugs including helping a dear friend recover during chemotherapy.
Jennifer is passionate about gardening, wild crafting, homesteading and raising our children in a chemical free world and teaching others to do the same. Knowing that with all of the new technology and discoveries, sometimes the best solution to a problem comes in the knowledge we learned at our grandmother’s side. She invites you to join her as she digs dandelion root and smells the aroma of salves, teas and poultices warming on the fire.

CompostGrower: Putney Farm
Price: $1.00 ( 1 Gallon )Available (Estimated): 50
Dry, cured compost, with a few leaves. Adds nutrients and humus the natural way. Contains leaves, feathers, egg shell, and chicken litter. This compost is completely finished, except for a few leaves here and there. Made on the ground and contains living enzymes, composting microbes, minerals, nutrients, and life.
To use chicken manure safely in your garden, it should be composted with a carbon-rich material such as straw.
Our heated and cured compost is completely safe for your plants and you.
The story behind this compost is this: The hens freely eat green living food and return it to the soil in the form of manure. We use the deep litter method of composting directly under the poultry roosts. When brown (leaves) meets green (chicken manure) in the right proportion, composting happens. The whole process heats up the litter and turns it into a powdery soil-scented material which will safely fertilize your most tender plants.
Scratch it in, mix it with soil, or dilute in water and sprinkle it on for a quick foiliar feeding.
"Chicken manure fertilizer is very high in nitrogen and also contains a good amount of potassium and phosphorus. The high nitrogen and balanced nutrients is the reason that chicken manure compost is the best kind of manure to use.
But, the high nitrogen in the chicken manure is dangerous to plants if the manure has not been properly composted. Raw chicken manure fertilizer can burn and even kill plants if used. Composting chicken manure mellows the nitrogen and makes the manure suitable for the garden.
Chicken manure composting gives the manure time to break down some of it more powerful nutrients so that they are more usable by the plants."

Compost - organic, unsifted (Putney Farm)Grower: Putney Farm
Price: $10.00 ( 15 gallons dry-measured )Available (Estimated): 26
QUICKLY ADD ORGANIC MATTER matter to your garden!Unlike commercial fertilizers which dissipate
very quickly, poultry litter breaks down over a period of time
slowly releasing nutrients into the soil so that young plants
receive the maximum benefit through all stages of growth.
Chicken litter compost is ideal for tomatoes since they
need a slow release of nitrogen through all three stages of development.
LAWNS: Organic litter will take that spot which is sparsely covered
with grass and make it the greenest, lushest part of your lawn. At
the same time it kills out stickers and other unwanted weeds. It
is a great year round fertilizer, making lawns green even with
winter type grass. The soil will eventually become so fertile that
your lawn will be much easier to maintain. You can have the best
lawn on the block and be 100 % organic!
Tests on certain pathogens, such as E. coli, and on Gumboro and New Castle disease viruses show that they do not survive the pasteurizing effects of composting.
The nutrient content of the compost will vary depending upon the amount and nutrient content of the manure and straw, the age of the compost, and the method of storage. Compost samples analyzed by the University of Delaware had the following average analysis on an "as sampled basis":
Moisture .................................... 28%
Nitrogen (total )....................... 1.85%
ammonium nitrogen.........0.15%
organic nitrogen...............1.70%
P2O5 ........................................ 2.29%

Nutritional InfoThe entire plant is very nutritious, packed with vitamins and minerals, and one of the aldehyde isomers found in Perilla is 2,000 times as sweet as sugar. There are many scientifically proven medicinal uses for Perilla. It has been used for centuries in Oriental medicine as an antiasthmatic, antibacterial, antidote, antimicrobial, antipyretic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antitussive, aromatic, carminative, diaphoretic, emollient, expectorant, pectoral, restorative, stomachic and tonic
The incredible flavor has been described as curry-like and a combination of cumin, cilantro and parsley with a hint of cinnamon. (Click on Nutritional information to read about medicinal and other uses.)
Sushi is the first thing that comes to mind....This is the red leaf that wraps it all up. In the mint family, perella has antibiotic properties, hence, raw fish is safer because of it. There are other uses, and it tastes good raw on its own. Excellent color in salads, stir-fry, or soups. Looks just like purple basil.
The Shiso Perilla Red (Akashiso), 'Perella frutescens 'crispa', is an intoxicating flavorful herb that should be as popular as basil or cilantro and it also is an attractive bedding plant. Red Shiso Perilla have green leaves that resemble basil except they have sharply serrated edges. Red Shiso is also commonly called Japanese basil/mint. The flavor is milder than Green Shiso.
Red Shiso has edible flowers. Mix or sprinkle over cucumbers, cabbage, fish, soups, rice, and potato dishes. The Shiso is also an excellent container plant. The crushed leaves smell like lemon balm.

Pest control
Main article: Pest control:
Herbs are also known amongst gardeners to be useful for pest control. Mint, Spearmint, Peppermint, and Pennyroyal are a few of such herbs. These herbs when planted around a house's foundation can help keep unwanted critters away such as flies, mice, ants, fleas, moth and tick amongst others. They are not known to be harmful or dangerous to children or pets, or any of the house's fixtures
"Edible Uses:
The leaves of spearmint are edible raw or cooked. Having a strong spearmint flavor, they are used as a flavoring in salads or cooked foods. Spearmint leaves can be used whole, chopped, dried and ground, frozen, preserved in salt, sugar, sugar syrup, alcohol, oil, or dried. The leaves are often used in 'mint sauce', which is used as a flavoring in meals. An essential oil from the leaves and flowers is used as a flavoring in sweets, ice cream, drinks etc. It has a spearmint flavor.
Medicinal Uses:
Spearmint is a commonly used domestic herbal remedy. A tea made from the leaves has traditionally been used in the treatment of fevers, headaches, digestive disorders and various minor ailments. The herb is antispasmodic, urine-inducing, restorative, stimulant, and has agents that prevent vomiting, that relieve and remove gas from the digestive system, and give tone and strength to the stomach.
The infusion of 1 oz (28 g) of dried herb to 1 pt (568 ml) of boiling water is also said to be excellent for nausea and wind."

Mint Tea Leaves DriedGrower: Putney Farm
Price: $6.44 ( 4 oz )Available (Exact): 5
Nutritional InfoWith a reputation for improving digestion, nothing is so refreshing as mint! This fine tea is so relaxing, and has a great fragrance!Spearmint leaves can be used whole, chopped, dried and ground, frozen, preserved in salt, sugar, sugar syrup, alcohol, oil, or dried. The leaves lose their aromatic appeal after the plant flowers. Dry it by cutting just before, or right (at peak) as the flowers open, about 1/2 to 3/4ths the way down the stalk (leaving smaller shoots room to grow). There is some dispute as to what drying method works best; some prefer different materials (such as plastic or cloth) and different lighting conditions (such as darkness or sunlight).
The cultivar Mentha spicata 'Nana', the Nana mint of Morocco, possesses a clear, pungent, but mild aroma and is an essential ingredient of Touareg Tea.
Spearmint is an ingredient in several mixed drinks, such as the mojito and mint julep. Sweet tea, iced and flavored with spearmint, is a summer tradition in the Southern United States. It is used as a flavoring for toothpaste and confectionery, and is sometimes added to shampoos and soaps. In herbalism, spearmint is steeped as tea for the treatment of stomach ache.
[edit] Health Effects
Recent research has shown that spearmint tea may be used as a treatment for mild hirsutism in women. Its anti-androgenic properties reduce the level of free testosterone in the blood, while leaving total testosterone and DHEA unaffected.[7]
Spearmint has been studied for antifungal activity; its essential oil was found to have some antifungal activity, although less than Oregano.[8] Its essential oil did not show any evidence of mutagenicity in the Ames test.[8] Spearmint has also been described as having excellent antioxidant activity; its antioxidant activity was found to be comparable to the synthetic BHT.[9] Due both to its antioxidant activity and its common use to season lamb in Indian cuisine, it has been studied as an additive to radiation-processed lamb meat, and was found effective in delaying oxidation of fats and reducing formation of harmful TBARS.[9]
